Building our ‘Ohana

Empowering Bereaved Parents: Leading Retreats

March was a month of growth and connection for ‘Ohana Oasis as we held a leadership training on the West Coast. This training was designed specifically for our alumni to learn to lead and support our week-long retreats. These retreats offer a sanctuary for parents who have suffered unimaginable loss, providing them with a safe space to heal, share, and support one another. Our retreats are solely led by other bereaved parents who have previously attended retreats, creating a deep sense of understanding and empathy. Here's an inside look at our March leadership training and how it’s setting the stage for our upcoming retreats in June in Idaho and in the fall in South Carolina.

Building a Community of Compassionate Leaders

The foundation of our retreats is the bond shared by parents who have experienced loss. This unique perspective allows for a level of empathy and connection that can't be found elsewhere. In March, we gathered a group of dedicated bereaved parents to equip them with the skills and tools necessary to lead our retreats. The training was as much about personal healing as it was about learning to support others through their grief journeys.

The curriculum was designed to foster both leadership skills and emotional resilience. We focused on active listening, group facilitation, and creating a supportive environment. Participants engaged in role-playing exercises, group discussions, and personal storytelling, all aimed at building a strong leadership foundation.

Creating a Safe Space for Healing

One of the key aspects of our training was learning how to create a safe and welcoming environment for retreat participants. We discussed the importance of empathy, non-judgmental listening, and allowing space for vulnerability. Our leaders-in-training explored techniques for managing group dynamics, resolving conflicts, and providing validation and safety during emotional moments.

The beauty of our retreats is that they are led by people who have walked the same path. This common ground fosters a sense of trust and allows for genuine connections to form. Our training emphasized the power of shared experiences.

Looking Ahead: Retreats in June and Fall in South Carolina

As we gear up for our upcoming retreats, the excitement and anticipation are building. In June, we will host our first retreat of the year in Driggs, Idaho.

Later this fall, we'll be heading to South Carolina for another week-long retreat. The natural beauty of these location promises to create an environment where healing can truly take place.

A Journey of Healing and Hope

Our March leadership training creates a network of leaders who understand the profound grief that comes with losing a child. The skills and connections made during this training will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on our upcoming retreats and the lives of those who attend.

I am grateful for the dedication and courage of our newly trained leaders and look forward to witnessing the positive effects they will create. As we continue to grow, we remain committed to our mission of providing a safe space for bereaved parents to heal, share, and find hope.

Thank you for joining us on this journey, and we look forward to sharing more stories of healing and transformation in the months to come. If you would like to learn more about our retreats or get involved, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. Together, we can create a community where no bereaved parent has to walk their journey alone.
