Walking Mindfully

I'm curious, how do stay grounded in and appreciating your life today, just as it is?

Spring feels like the perfect time to focus on being present. Why? Trees are unfurling new leaves, flowers pop up with vibrant colors, and the air feels new. It's the perfect time to combine exercise and mindfulness by taking a walk enjoying the season noticing nature's changes each day.

Most days I start walking with my mind working over time so I find peace in the present with a walking meditation. Presence with the added bonus burning calories too...count me in😉.

Here’s a walking meditation I like:

Start with being mindful of your breath. Breathe in through your nose taking in love, support and peace and breathe out through your mouth releasing tension, thoughts, and worries of the day.

Notice your body. Are you holding tension anywhere? Release it. Beginning with your head and traveling down through your neck, shoulders, arms, torso, and legs relax your body observing how it moves as you walk.

Now tune into your surroundings spending a couple of minutes focusing on each of these in consecutive order:

  • What you feel as you walk

    1. What you see around you

    2. What you hear

    3. What you smell

Come back to your breath and when you’re ready breathe out any remaining tension and breathe in gratitude for your body that’s carrying you and the earth that’s supporting you.

What do you do to keep grounded in the moment? I'd love to hear your secrets…shoot me an email at heidi@ohanaoasis.org
